We are bouncing around Great Windsor Park in the new Vauxhall Grandland X hybrid4 – and not a royal in sight.
I have no idea where their hideouts might be but then my attention is on the road ahead. This plug-in hybrid version of the Griffin marque’s big SUV comes with all-wheel drive and courtesy of someone – Her Maj perhaps – we are trying it out on the muddy and rutted paths of the Crown Estate.
There has been some rain recently and the paths are well-watered and slippy but the Grandland X, which we have switched to all-wheel drive, is taking it all in its stride. Moreover, and even more surprisingly, we are doing this three-mile off-road challenge in all-electric mode.
Boris Johnson has added hybrid to the new cars he has proscribed from 2035 but, really, this is exactly the kind of car that will ease people into electric models because it teaches them how to use the technology that will come in EVs with the knowledge that they also have a 1.6-litre petrol engine below them… Read more
